• Where: John Donehue Jiu Jitsu & MMA, 6/278 Ferntree Gully Rd, Notting Hill, Vic, 3168
• When: 6pm – 7pm, Wednesday 7th of March
In celebration of International Women’s Day, John Donehue Jiu Jitsu & MMA are partnering with the Melbourne Tigers SEABL Women’s basketball team to offer a free 1-hour self-defence class on Wednesday the 7th of March for women 14 years and older.
The class will be run by John Donehue Jiu Jitsu & MMA’s qualified coaches, Jade Kerr and Zachary Phillips. Students will be taught easy to learn highly effective self-defence techniques in an enjoyable, non-threatening environment.
“We hope by running our free self-defence class we can help empower women with the confidence and situational awareness. So that if they are ever in a potentially dangerous and stressful situation they have the tools to firstly avoid it, but if they can’t, have the ability to protect themselves.” – John Donehue, Head Coach at John Donehue Jiu Jitsu & MMA
“As a small female, I can confidently say I am equipped with tools to help avoid and protect myself should a situation ever arise. This is all thanks to the style of training at John Donehue Jiu Jitsu and MMA. I am a strong advocate for everyone learning some kind of self-defence and what better way than in this safe, controlled and fun environment. I am sure this free self-defence session is a step in the right direction for women of any age, experience or background to walk away with new skills feeling more confident and empowered.” – Jade Kerr, Head Coach at John Donehue Jiu Jitsu & MMA
“Students will be taught that the best form of self-defence is to avoid conflict where ever possible. If a potentially threatening situation arises, action should be taken to de-escalate or escape the situation. Only when all other options are exhausted should somebody resort to physical conflict. If that occurs, hard and fast strikes to anatomical weak points should be emphasised. The goal is always to look for an avenue to escape to safety. I believe in realistic, pressure tested training that focuses on easy to remember and implement techniques – perfect for all body types and experience levels.” – Zachary Phillips, Coach at John Donehue Jiu Jitsu & MMA
The self-defence class is based on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a combat form based on weaponless fighting, creating techniques designed to put you in control, no matter your size or strength.
“In our sport, there’s a saying that defence wins championships. There are often times in high-pressure games where your defensive skills are called upon, and you must get a critical defensive stop. The same holds true in life. When posed with a potentially dangerous, pressure situation, having the tools to be able to defend yourself is a vital skill to avoid an unwanted outcome. I think this is an outstanding and proactive initiative by John Donehue Jiu Jitsu and MMA to help equip our female community with the knowledge and tools they need if a situation arises.” – Mark Alabakov, Head Coach, Melbourne Tigers SEABL Women.
“Our Melbourne Tigers team is looking forward to taking part. We spend so much of our Basketball training preparing for things that might happen in a game so that we have a plan and we’re ready when the time comes and don’t get caught by surprise. Learning self-defence techniques are preparing ourselves for the same thing in day-to-day life – it’s something you might need one day to get you out of trouble.” – Briana Babic, Melbourne Tigers SEABL Women.
This carefully constructed self-defence class is designed to prepare students to deal with any dangerous situation, be it in the street, home, workplace, nightclub, open space, or in the confines of a car. It concentrates on the following key areas:
• The importance of diffusing a situation before it becomes physical
• Deciding that you are going to fight for your life as soon as a threat occurs
• Teaching women how to defeat their attacker quickly and effectively, ensuring their safety
We hope you will join us and the Melbourne Tigers SEABL Women at John Donehue Jiu Jitsu & MMA – come and learn some life proofing skills in a supportive environment!
Every woman who registers for the event will receive a 7-day trail pass to one discipline at John Donehue Jiu Jitsu & MMA valued at over $45 and a ticket to see a Melbourne Tigers Women’s SEABL home game.
