It is with great pleasure and excitement for the Melbourne Tigers to announce that Michael (Mickey) Luxford has signed with the men’s team to compete in the new elite NBL1 league for the upcoming 2019 season.

Mickey has had a stellar career to date, initially as a prominent junior basketball player making every level of junior Victorian State teams and making Australian teams including being a part of the  U17 team which won silver in the 2012 World Cup.  Mickey has grown up playing basketball in good company sharing the court with Dante Exum and Ben Simmons throughout his junior basketball days, for his local club, the State and for Australia.

Having turned his hand to the AFL, Mickey was drafted as a ‘Category B’ rookie by the Geelong Cats in 2013, being elevated to the senior list in 2015 when he played his first AFL game. On being delisted in 2016, Mickey returned to basketball and played with Geelong Supercats in 2018, and with limited opportunity, averaged 6.3 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds per game and was 6th overall for the total number of steals in the league.

Mickey has been totally focussed on returning to be a dominant force in basketball, and is already making headway, having been invited to train with NBL team Illawarra for 3 months before joining the Tigers training group.

We look forward to Mickey playing the starting point guard role and knocking down those 3-pointers!

The Tigers stage their first home game, (a double header with the women’s Youth and NBL1 teams) at MSAC on Sunday 31st March.
