In celebration of International Women’s Day, John Donehue Jiu Jitsu & MMA are partnering with the Melbourne Tigers SEABL Women’s basketball team to offer a free 1-hour self-defence class on Wednesday the 7th of March for women 14 years and older.

The class will be run by John Donehue Jiu Jitsu & MMA’s qualified coaches, Jade Kerr and Zachary Phillips. Students will be taught easy to learn highly effective self-defence techniques in an enjoyable, non-threatening environment.

“Students will be taught that the best form of self-defence is to avoid conflict where ever possible. If a potentially threatening situation arises, action should be taken to de-escalate or escape the situation. Only when all other options are exhausted should somebody resort to physical conflict. If that occurs, hard and fast strikes to anatomical weak points should be emphasised. The goal is always to look for an avenue to escape to safety. The self-defence class is based on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a combat form based on weaponless fighting, creating techniques designed to put you in control, no matter your size or strength.

The same holds true in life. When posed with a potentially dangerous, pressure situation, having the tools to be able to defend yourself is a vital skill to avoid an unwanted outcome. This carefully constructed self-defence class is designed to prepare students to deal with any dangerous situation, be it in the street, home, workplace, nightclub, open space, or in the confines of a car. It concentrates on the following key areas:
• The importance of diffusing a situation before it becomes physical
• Deciding that you are going to fight for your life as soon as a threat occurs
• Teaching women how to defeat their attacker quickly and effectively, ensuring their safety
